Get more out of your money by having the food items you eat the most last longer. You’ll learn how to store staples, such as butter and herbs.
1. How to Store Bread
Bread keeps better in your freezer than the fridge, where it inevitably goes stale. You'll want to use sliced bread for this, where it will keep this way for up to 6 months. The best way to thaw it is uncovered on a plate in the microwave on high for about 20 seconds.
2. How to Store Rice
Some grains can take longer to cook than an entire meal. By cooking them ahead and freezing them in individual servings, you can easily have these staples on hand whenever you want. Rice will keep in the freezer for one month.
3. How to Store Herbs
If you love fresh herbs, this is one of the best ways to store them. Chop up your herbs and evenly divide them across the cups of an ice cube tray. Add enough oil to cover and freeze! Transfer the cubes to a zipper bag once frozen and they'll keep for months. Here is a great food hack for stripping herbs.
4. How to Store Butter
Storing butter in the freezer is very convenient. If you bake a lot, you might even want to cube it beforehand. It will keep for 12 months but best to use it within 6. Use it within 30 days after removing it from the freezer.
5. How to Store Flour
Flour stays powdery when frozen, which makes it very convenient. Scoop what you need and return it to the freezer. Frozen flour won't get buggy or rancid, and All-Purpose flour can last up to 2 years this way.
