How to Organize Your Fridge

by Waverly Wilde

If you’ve found yourself in a situation where your refrigerator needs major organizing, we can’t help but sympathize with you. Resituating the inside of your fridge can be overwhelming – but don’t worry! We won’t leave you to decide if the milk should be put in the side compartment with the condiments, and side note – it should not – but we’ll show you simple ways that will make yours easy to navigate.

Take it All Out

Is there anything more intimidating than an overly filled fridge? The best way to start organizing your fridge is by removing everything and starting from scratch. We don’t mean throwing away everything in your fridge; just simply take out all the items and place them on your countertop. As you do this, you’ll start to notice there may be some old leftovers that were hidden from view and maybe other things that are well past their expiration date. And once everything is out, you’ll be able to examine your refrigerator for any spills or messes that need cleaning up.

Big in Back

Now that you have an empty refrigerator, it’s time to start filling it in with everything you’ve decided to keep. The best way to do this is by placing the larger items in back so that they aren’t obstructing your view from anything. That last thing you want is to not see the cheddar cheese which means you, A: never get to eat it, and B: have to clean up a moldy mess when you finally discover it (probably due to the smell!). Keep it simple by putting tall products such as juices, milks, and other beverages in first.

Leftovers in Front

With that being said, don’t just put the smaller items up front—be sure to put leftovers in a place that you won’t miss. Leftover food is only good for a couple of days, so it’s better if you get those meals out of the way instead of continuing to add to the pile.

Produce in Drawers

When it comes to your fruit and vegetables, those should always be stored in the lower drawers. Our refrigerators’ compartments have special features that always keep your produce at that proper temperature so make sure those drawers are exclusively fruits and vegetables. Storing them in these drawers away from the other items in the refrigerator will keep your produce fresh and easy to grab when looking for a healthy snack.

Warmer Items in Doors

Did you know that the warmest part of the fridge are the doors? Because of this, it’s important that you put only the foods that can handle the warmest temperatures in the door’s shelves. Condiments and sauces are generally safe to include in your door’s compartment while milk and eggs are a great example of what shouldn’t be in there.
